Bladder conditions such as urinary incontinence, overactive bladder and interstitial cystitis (IC) are common, particularly among women, yet the taboo surrounding bladder health can leave those affected feeling isolated and unsupported. A lack of accessible information and community can make diagnosis especially difficult, with many people struggling to understand their own condition while also trying to explain it to those around them.
Bloody Bladders! explores how design can break down some of these barriers by creating a more open, supportive space for people living with bladder conditions, particularly IC.
Primary and secondary research helped shape the direction of the project. Primary research gathered from online IC support communities was used to develop personas and identify gaps in existing support. While symptoms and experiences varied from person to person, a shared emotional journey began to emerge, with similarities to the five stages of grief.
Following ideation, an initial concept for a letter designed to help people explain their condition to loved ones developed into a more tangible communication tool — a card, supported by the creation of a wider brand.
Brella is a cosy, welcoming brand created to collate and share knowledge around IC while making difficult conversations feel more approachable. A series of illustrated fill-in cards, postcards and envelopes provides a simple way to communicate feelings, symptoms and experiences with loved ones, particularly following diagnosis.
An illustrated map, inspired by Jenna P Studio, represents the IC experience externally while revealing a personalised element within. Together, the touchpoints create a supportive and personal way to communicate an often difficult-to-explain condition, helping people feel less alone and giving loved ones a starting point for understanding.
The project was shortlisted for a Creative Conscience Award.
